Some of you may already know that: me and Jacques were working in the shadows (sort of) creating an online magazine, which is finally online: it´s TERRA INCOGNITA. In the beginning we intended to make it bilingual, but, due to a series of setbacks in the production, it couldn´t be done. So, the first issue is entirely in Portuguese, featuring some new and already classic Brazilian SF authors, like Ivan Hegenberg, Carlos Orsi, and Guilherme Kujawski. Plus a special guest: Ekaterina Sedia is our first one, featuring a translation of her short story The Disemboweler, plus an interview and an article on her work.
Having said that, we are opening a call for submissions for a special edition entirely in English, featuring previously unpubished stories. If all goes well, our intention is make this English edition quarterly - and open another niche for science fiction authors from all over the world.
So, here it goes:
TERRA INCOGNITA is a Brazilian SF free online magazine in PDF format. The magazine's main goal is to increase the genre's exposition in Brazilian fandom. A second goal is to widen the horizons of readers and writers alike, publishing stories that defy standards, break paradigms and bring something new to the genre as a whole.
The first English Edition of TERRA INCOGNITA magazine will be published in the second half of December, 2008. We are looking strictly for fiction submissions. TERRA INCOGNITA will be, mostly, a short fiction magazine, open to eventual pieces of poetry and serialized novellas. Only one submission per author will be accepted, with limits between 1.000 and 10.000 words.
Being free, TERRA INCOGNITA will not pay for any published material. However, one of the main goals of its creators is to pursue financial sustainability so as to provide future payment for its contributors.
Submissions are open from October 15th to November 15th 2008. Stories sent before and after this period will be deleted without reading.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
FICTION - 1.000 to 10.000 words. What we want is imaginative and different fiction, from concept to execution. We believe that to be well-written and funny is just the most basic thing in any fiction. TERRA INCOGNITA wants more than that: thought-provoking, innovative, multicultural fiction full with content and meaning. More specifically, TERRA INCOGNITA aims for new approaches to Science Fiction. New themes, new results.
What we we want: provocative texts, where the author may feel free to use harsh vocabulary, violence, heresy and sex. We also want texts full of passion, beauty, grace and humor, poetry and huge epic scope. We are for new, shocking, thrilling, startling stories.
What we definitely don't want: derivative fiction from RPGs, animes, videogames, fanfics, aesthetical or ideological conservatism, well-mannered behaviour, no plot worldbuilding and melodrama. Everything that makes no effort to create new approaches.
We prefer all submissions in standard manuscript format. Simultaneous submissions accepted, but no multiple submissions. Cover letters are welcome, but not essential. You may receive a form rejection, but the editors will do their very best to give personal comments as time allows. Allow 3-4 weeks response time. Address for submissions is terraincognita@verbeat.org.
PUBLICATION TERMS
All the texts published in TERRA INCOGNITA will be under Creative Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 2.5 Brazil Commons. Authors' rights will be kept by the authors, but the magazine and its contents may be freely copied and distributed, if it´s done with noncommercial purposes.
